Coating areas of inflammation, speeding healing and reducing gas and spasms are measures that should help many people feel more comfortable. Pungent herbs, like ginger, can accelerate the digestive process, so potential irritants spend less time in the digestive system.
Main Uses:
Digestive irritation Pain of hiatus hernia Digestive ulceration Bloating Indigestion
Properties
Slippery Elm - has a high mucilage content, a substance that effectively soothes and coats the lining of the digestive system to protect against acid and irritants. Slippery Elm also has some anti-inflammatory effects.
Marshmallow - is also very high in mucilage and is reputed to have wound healing properties. Marshmallow has also demonstrated some anti microbial activity against, among others, the Proteus genus, a highly mobile bacteria common in the intestines and in decaying organic material. One of these, Proteus vulgaris can cause urinary tract infections. Ginger - is one of the best known remedies for digestive comfort, famous for its an anti-nausea effects and for intestinal colic. The pungent principles (gingerols and shogoals) account for its carminative (wind-relieving) and anti-spasmodic properties. Ginger also increases bile flow (choleretic), aiding digestion of fatty meals and reducing acidity in the duodenum, as bile is alkaline.
Peppermint - has some similar effects to ginger, sharing the carminative, anti-spasmodic and choleretic benefits. Peppermint is especially effective in Irritable Bowel Syndrome, relaxing the hyper-contractability of the smooth muscles of the intestines.
Contra-indications / Precautions
Ginger is not suitable for those taking blood thinners. Peppermint should be avoided in cases of chronic heartburn, or obstructions of the bile ducts.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
